Taking Your Children Camping
Camping with kids requires a lot more effort in planning, packing and preparation than if you were only camping with a bunch of adults. Kids are a lot of fun to bring along camping if you made the right preparation and planned well.
Aside from the thorough preparation, consideration of the kids’ needs take top priority, leaving little or no room for you and spouse’s. For kids, camping can be an experience of a lifetime so it's well worth the small sacrifice.
The precious time that you are able to spend with your kids at the trip—playing, exploring nature, and doing camping activities are simply rewarding. Because you love these little creatures so much, you don’t mind putting that extra effort to your camping trips because you know it won’t be memorable without them anyway.
Here are some tips you can start out for a smooth camping trip:
- A good way to help you find out what the kids would need on a camping trip is to ask the kids. They might just point things that you might miss otherwise.
Showing that you trust your kids by getting them involved in the preparation for camping will teach them to think like responsible adult.
- You don't need a high quality sleeping bag for the kids. A cheap junior sleeping bag is sufficient.
- Try backyard camping if it’s your kids’ first camping trip so they know what to expect and they won’t get homesick.
- Teach your kids to pitch their own tents and other simple and safe tasks so that they can help out.
- Teach them how to use camping equipment like compass and rain gear.
- At night you can gather round the campfire to sing songs and tell stories.
- Show them the wonders of nature by taking them into an environmental tour through a day hike. During the educational tour of acquainting them with the flora and fauna and the creatures that reside in the forest, be sure to incorporate valuable lessons on respect for nature.
- Don’t forget to teach them how to keep themselves safe at the camp. No playing with fire and no swimming in the lake alone are just some of the many rules they have to be familiar about.
- To get the kids to be interested in chores, create games out of them
- Do some bird watching.
- Don't forget the insect repellent and sunscreen.
- To help your kids deal with anxiety at night, give them a flashlight or glow stick.
- Among the things you can do at night is star gazing.
- Don’t forget to bring the very important first aid kit for small accidents or mishaps.
- Have some night snacks. Not inside the tent of course. Before you go to sleep, a few chats and chips will surely be a great finale to a great day.
- Bring toys that will make the camping even more fun. For instance, a kiddie magnifying glass will make exploring of insects even more interesting.
- A camera and extra should be on the must-have list for a family camping trip.
Camping with the kids is a cheap vacation alternative especially in these tough economic times. Seeing the kids happy will make the extra effort worthwhile.
